Discover Daghestan's playful twist on traditional embroidery! Originating from the Kaytagsky District in southeast Dagestan, Russia, this simple art form features silk-floss embroidery on cotton canvas with horseback riders and hunting scenes. With motifs influenced by classical Safavid Persian art, the abstract designs have been compared to those of Matisse and Paul Klee. Surviving examples date back to the 17th and 18th centuries and were used for special occasions like weddings and funerals.
